Adult Basic Education

The ABE program at Nash Community College serves students who score between a 4th and 8th grade reading and math level. After completing a two-day orientation, students are placed in graduated reading and math courses. Students work on basic skills until they progress to the HSE (High School Equivalency) level at which point they transition into higher level classes. Additionally students in the ABE program are eligible for expanded pathway courses which prepare them to enter either curriculum or continuing education when they complete their High School Equivalency. Students in the ABE program are also eligible to take a free Microsoft IT course for certification.
Choose from:
• Intro to Direct Care/PHCAST
• Cosmetology
• Hospitality and Food Service
• Public Safety

The High School Equivalency

Students in the HSE program score at or above a 9th grade level in reading and math.  After orientation, students are placed in graduated courses in math and writing.  Additionally we offer a “Fast Track” course that covers science and social studies concepts.  When students feel comfortable they may take one of three exams to complete.  We offer the GED, HiSET, and the TASC in our testing center.

The Adult High School Diploma Program is available to adults who wish to complete their high school education. This program is offered cooperatively by Nash Community College and the Nash-Rocky Mount School System. Each student progresses at his/her own rate in the competency-based program. Students must complete 22 units of credit for the Adult High School Diploma Program. Credits must be earned in the traditional high school subjects.

The English as a Second Language Program serves foreign-born adults with limited English proficiency. The program focuses on the development of basic communication and survival skills. Competencies are taught in the areas of listening, speaking, writing and day-to-day living skills. For more information, please contact Aida Solorzano.

Compensatory Education classes are offered free of cost for adults who have documented developmental disabilities. The program provides an opportunity for students to enhance both academic and human relations skills. The goal of our program is to integrate students more independently and successfully into their respective communities.

The Learning Center contains a large assortment of self-instructional materials for those who wish to study independently, regardless of their educational level. Center instructors are available to assist students in selecting appropriate learning resources. Areas of study include: preparation for the high school equivalency tests, high school diploma completion, review for college placement tests, enhancement of basic skills, and personal interest topics.
