Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed to give students the essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, or municipal governments. This program utilizes state- commission- mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include, but are not limited to: criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic, and alcoholic beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody, and court procedures: emergency response and ethics and community relations.
Successful graduates receive a certificate and are qualified to take certification examinations mandated by the North Carolina criminal justice education and training standards commission.
In-service law enforcement training
Nash Community College offers a variety of in-service law enforcement training classes. These courses provide the essential skills, knowledge, and resources necessary for law enforcement officers to stay abreast of the changes that are occurring in this field.
General topics include, but are not limited to: radar certification, drug interdiction for the patrol officer, bike school, in- service firearms training, defensive driving, k-9 training and subject control techniques/defensive tactics training. These courses are offered as the need arises for officers and agencies. If your agency has a need for any of these courses, please contact our office.
Advanced Canine Utilization: This is an advanced course that picks up where the canine handler courses stop. Handlers attend monthly training sessions that focus on strategies for increased use of canines.
Arson Investigation: This course is designed to give the student a better understanding of recognizing and investigating arson crimes. This course will give an overview of basic arson investigation and recognition that will benefit the patrol officer and investigator.
ASP Baton: Officers will be taught the basic operation of the ASP Baton and will become proficient with each technique to the instructor's satisfaction.
Bike Officer School: This course is designed to equip the student with the basic skills needed to operate a bicycle as a law enforcement vehicle. This course will also enhance the community policing abilities of officers. The course will use lecture and practical exercises.
BLET: Basic Law Enforcement Training is designed to equip the student with the basic skills, knowledge, and ability to function as an experienced law enforcement officer in North Carolina. This course is composed of 35 blocks of instruction with a state mandated minimum number of hours for each block of instruction. This course is a prerequisite for certification as a police officer in North Carolina.
Canine Handler Certification: This course will train law enforcement officers to handle a police working dog. This course will cover basic skills such as giving commands, obedience, motivation of canines, agility drills, evidence searches, basic tracking, vehicle searches, narcotics searches, and criminal apprehensions.
Crime Scene for Patrol Officers: This course is designed to provide the student with the skills and knowledge to observe, protect, and properly process a crime scene. The course will use lecture and practical exercises.
Cyber Crimes Investigation: This course will give the student basic skills and understanding of the investigation of cyber crimes. This course will give the student a better understanding of evidence preservation, investigation of sexual predators, computer resources, online resources, and a general overview of computer related investigations.
Detention Officers Certification Course: This course is designed to equip the student with the basic skills, knowledge, and abilities to function as a detention officer in a county jail or local confinement facility. Course content is mandated and regulated by the North Carolina Sheriff’s Commission.
Field Training Officer Certification: This course is designed to give the student the basic skills and knowledge to supervise and train new officers. The course will cover the roles of an FTO, learning styles, communication skills, objectivity in grading, and completing FTO paperwork.
Intermediate Traffic Crash Investigation: This course is designed to equip the officer with the knowledge and skills to investigate a traffic crash, collect evidence, and document the investigation thoroughly. The class will include lecture and practical exercises.
Intro to Social Networking Websites: This course is designed to give officers an overview of social networking websites such as Face Book and My Space. The course will equip officers with the knowledge to set up accounts and search and move through these sites to gather information. This course will also focus on the use of these sites by gangs. This class is geared toward School Resource Officers and Investigators.
O/C Certification/Re-Certification: This course will present the student with a basic understanding of the aerosol Oleoresin Capsicum and it’s proper use. The course will also cover suspect control after spraying and decontamination techniques. The initial certification will require exposure to O/C . This course is also available for officers needing re-certification in O/C.
Radar Certification: This class is taught to certify the student in the use of radar units as approved and mandated by the Training and Standards Commission. Students must pass a written exam and practical exam on speed estimation to obtain certification. This course will use lecture and practical exercises.
Radar Re-Certification: This course is for those officers wishing to renew their radar certification in accordance with state standards.
Search Warrant Preparation: This course is designed to teach students the skills needed to properly apply for and execute a search warrant.
Segway for Law Enforcement: The course is designed to give the officer the skills necessary to safely operate a Segway while performing his/her duties. Officers do not have to have any experience on a Segway nor do they have to have a Segway to attend this class. However, if your agency has a Segway, please feel free to bring it to the class for your use.
Standardized Field Sobriety Test: This course is designed to enhance the students ability to detect impaired drivers. Standardized methods of field sobriety testing are introduced. Evening hours are required. This course includes practical exercises and controlled drinking exercises.
Taser Certification: This course is designed to equip the student with the knowledge and skills needed to carry and successfully deploy a Taser Electric Impulse Device. The instructors are certified by Taser to deliver this course of instruction. Initial certification requires students be exposed to the taser for certification.
Verbal Judo: Officers will be taught to communicate during street encounters. These communication skills will improve police/community relations, reduce complaints, and save time. This class will employ lecture and small group work.
Tactical Tracking: This course is designed to provide training for officers in the tacking of suspects with or without a dog. The training will cover topics that relate to tracking suspects or missing persons and it will cover proper methods of assisting a K-9 officer in tracking persons as well. This course is open to K-9 officers as well as other sworn officers that have an interest in tracking and assisting K-9 officers with tracks.
Rapid Deployment This course is designed to give the officer the knowledge and skills to enter into a critical incident scenario and react according to state standards. This course will proved officers with training that they can use at any given critical situation and work with any officer who is there to assist.
