Your Opportunity to Make a Difference

If your year-end gifts are not already wrapped, consider giving a gift this year that keeps on giving. The Nash Community College Foundation offers a variety of options for giving. Your name and generosity will always be remembered when you make a planned gift that will last well beyond your lifetime. In addition to the satisfaction that comes from investing in the future of your community through the advancement of education, you may realize significant tax and real estate planning benefits.

On October 22, 2009, students were honored at the Thirty-Fourth Annual Scholarship Awards Day in the Brown Auditorium of the NCC Business and Industry Center. Over 200 scholarships totaling $170,000 were awarded to deserving students for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The annual awards day ceremony serves as a time to recognize students’ academic achievements and the positive impact the donors’ gifts have had on students’ lives.

The Nash Community College Foundation began in 1983 to provide educational opportunities for the citizens of our community. One of the goals of the NCC Foundation is to increase awareness within the community of the value of Nash Community College and to strengthen the scholarship program.

Though the College’s tuition is considered to be reasonable, scholarships are critical to helping many students who wish to attend college but have very limited resources. Nash Community College receives hundreds of scholarship applications each year but is only able to assist a limited number of students. As the cost of education continues to rise, more scholarships are needed to truly make the difference in helping students reach their personal and professional goals.

A Gift that Lives Forever

Josephine HedgepethJosephine Hackney Hedgepeth knew that by establishing the Josephine Hackney Hedgepeth and Merion Smith Hedgepeth Memorial Scholarship in her estate, she would be giving an endowed scholarship that would live forever and would benefit many others. Unable to obtain a formal education herself, she wanted to provide the opportunity for someone who had the desire to attend college, but could not afford to.

She passed away on July 24, 1996 but her gift lives forever. Hedgepeth was a retired Belk employee with 42 years of service. She was a Sunday School teacher at Englewood Baptist Church for many years, a member of the Altrusa Club for 28 years, and a member of the Belk Retiree Club. She also volunteered for several years at Community Hospital and was well-known for her cooking and baking for family and friends.

With a strong tradition of charitable giving, Josephine and her husband, Merion, were known for their unselfishness and great compassion for people. They were very sensitive to the needs of others. The Hedgepeth Memorial Endowment ensures that their contributions and ideals will always be remembered along with their desire to help the students of Nash Community College.

2008 Annual Report

Steve Felton

"With only 35% of students eligible for federal aid, that leaves a significant number of the 3000 students that Nash Community College serves each semester with little or no financial assistance," said Steve Felton. "I chose to serve in this leadership position because I believe that the other 65% of deserving students should have an opportunity to receive help with their educational needs as well."

The family of Steve Felton established the Steve Felton Business Scholarship Fund in 2005 to reflect their commitment to providing educational opportunities for the citizens of the Nash/Rocky Mount area.
