(Rocky Mount, NC) On Friday, June 18, seven students were recognized for completing the Recruit Firefighter Class at Nash Community College. Nash Community College's Fire Service Training program is designed to provide individuals and firefighters the information and skills needed for modern firefighting through a variety of learning experiences and training scenarios. The classes are often taken directly to firefighters through training sessions held in local departments and at training sites throughout the community.
In his keynote address, Nash County Emergency Services Assistant Director Scott Rogers shared, "You have learned to work as a team or accomplished teamwork; you have learned to push yourselves to new limits and you have accomplished your goals through perseverance. You have completed your assignments both academic in the classroom and the practicals on the drill grounds. The classroom work challenged your mind, while the skill training was physically demanding. It wasn't easy, but neither is the job."
"You have accomplished becoming certified level II firefighters, certified Emergency Medical Technicians, and certified Hazardous Materials Responders," Rogers said. "This is an accomplishment that less than 50% of the current firefighters in North Carolina have chosen to do or been able to accomplish. You have received some of the best training available, and because of that training and your experiences here, you will be singled out as leaders at fire departments and in your community."
Graduates from left to right: Kehani Green of Hollister, Joseph May of Louisburg, Nathaniel Truss of Washington, DC, Justin Cannon of Oak City, Tyler Hinton of Nashville, Marvin Harrison of Rocky Mount, Dustin Joyner of Nashville and North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal Fire & Rescue Training Specialist Shannon Orndorff. Special honors were awarded to: Justin Cannon (recognized for highest academic honors), Dustin Joyner (Recruit Battalion Chief), Marvin Harrison (selected by his peers as most outstanding and most overall accomplishments) and Rocky Mount Fire Department Captain R. Moore (selected by the class for instructional excellence, as most influential and mentor).
