Nash Community College has selected Steven D. “Steve” Felton of Rocky Mount as the recipient of the 2013 Nash Community College Outstanding Alumnus Award. The award recognizes the achievements of past graduates and provides inspiration for current students of Nash Community College. Felton was recognized and presented an honorary degree by NCC President Dr. Bill Carver during a ceremony on Wednesday, April 17th.
Steve Felton studied Business Administration at Nash Technical College from 1981 until 1983. As a student, he was a leader in the Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) Business Organization and was named Who’s Who in American Community and Junior Colleges. He continued his education at North Carolina Wesleyan College earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration.
Felton was honored as Nash Community College’s 1991 PBL “Business Person of the Year” at the state and local levels recognizing his achiev
ements in the business community. In 2005, he joined the NCC Foundation Board of Directors and along with his family established the Steven D. Felton Business Scholarship Fund to reflect their commitment to providing educational opportunities for the citizens of the Nash/Rocky Mount area.
Graduate, leader, instructor, student, veteran and lifelong learner: These are titles used to describe Donnie Daniels of Rocky Mount. A proven leader with over 24 years of experience in emergency services, his cross-functional background includes military, law enforcement, administrative, professional and volunteer fire experience. He personifies Dallas Herring’s philosophy, “taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go.”
Daniels began his career in 1999 as a firefighter with the City of Rocky Mount. Five years later, while enrolled in Nash Community College’s Emergency Preparedness Technology curriculum program, he was promoted to Captain. In 2006, at the age of 37, he completed his Associate in Applied Science degree in Emergency Preparedness Technology.
“My time at Nash Community College was a challenge, as it should be. I remember what it was like being a full time student and a full time firefighter. At the same time, I was a husband, a father of three very active kids, a youth baseball coach, a volunteer firefighter with Red Oak Fire Department, as well as staying active in my church. I remember at times it seemed a little overwhelming,” Daniels said. Read Full Story

Steve Felton attended Nash Technical Institute from 1981 through 1983. In 1982, when Nash Technical Institute’s name changed to Nash Technical College, he displayed a handmade sign with the new name. Felton was an active member of the Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) Business Organization and later went on to North Carolina Wesleyan College graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1984. Today he serves as a Senior Financial Advisor with AMERIPRISE Financial.
“Nash Community College offered me a new direction in life. I was at an uncertain point of what direction my life was going to take and NCC took a personal interest in me and my potential and helped me to begin to rebuild my confidence. Through the guidance and coaching of their Business Department and several other key people, I learned that I possessed the leadership skills that would help me in furthering my education and ultimately becoming a business owner in the Rocky Mount community. I am where I am today because of NCC,” Felton said.
Today, Felton gives back through his service on the NCC Foundation Board and by assisting students like Medical Office Administration student Morgan Saunders of Nashville in gaining real-world experience. He and his family also assist deserving students through the establishment of the Steven D. Felton Business Scholarship.
