Rocky Mount, NC - Nash Community College honored 60 of its top students during a recent Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society induction ceremony. Established in 1964, the Gamma Beta Phi society is a national, non-profit, educational, honor and service organization that recognizes excellence in education, while promoting the development of leadership ability and character, and encouraging community service. To receive an invitation for membership, students must have a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and have completed at least 12 semester hours in a major at Nash Community College. The NCC Chapter has earned the National Distinguished Chapter Award for the past 24 years, and the Exemplary Chapter Award since 2009.
Among the many service projects Gamma Beta Phi members participate in is the Adopt-a-Grandparent program at Trinity Retirement Villas in Nashville. Adopt-a-Grandparent began about 15 years ago when a Gamma Beta Phi member's grandmother was a resident at Trinity Retirement Villas. Throughout the year, members visit the residents and take them special treats. At Christmas, Gamma Beta Phi members provide the residents with gifts. "Each member who participates ends up receiving more than they could ever give - the love and appreciation from the Trinity Villas residents. We have found that for some of the residents, we are the only visitors they get to see. It is our honor to be able to visit with these wonderful individuals throughout the year," Gamma Beta Phi Advisor Robin Latham said. Members also serve the community by collecting personal items for My Sister's House, volunteering at Habitat for Humanity, raising funds for the United Way Tar River Region and Relay for Life of Nash County, donating books and other items to the Bassett Center and volunteering with Communities in Schools and local literacy efforts. "When I was inducted into the Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society at Nash Community College in 1985, I never dreamed that one day I would become the advisor for this Chapter. For me, Gamma Beta Phi is rewarding and meaningful. I get to work with the finest students at Nash Community College, and together, we serve the community through various projects," Latham said.
