The Library

The Nash Community College Library houses a continually growing collection of print and nonprint resources which have been selected to enrich all programs. It provides facilities for research, study, reading, listening and viewing to supplement class instruction. In addition, the library serves recreational interests of students, faculty, staff, and the community at large.

Expanded and renovated in 1996, the Library provides seating for 186 persons in a spacious, comfortable, well-lit area easily accessible from all campus buildings. The mezzanine, located away from the hub of activity, is designated for quiet study. Three conference rooms are available for group study and small meetings. The collection of 42,000 books is accessed via a computerized catalog known as WebCat. The WebCat system is user friendly and also allows access to the library holdings of all North Carolina community colleges and other selected colleges and universities.

Online resources are available in the Library at designated Internet stations. Internet users are required to adhere to the College's Internet Policy found on page 51 of the catalog. Before logging on, patrons must present a valid library card and sign the Internet log. Assistance with the library system is available upon request. Remote access is also available for most on-line databases including WebCat.

State-of-the-art method of obtaining online information is available via NC-LIVE. NC-LIVE, an acronym for North Carolina Libraries for Virtual Education, is a partnership of North Carolina's libraries that provides access to a vast world of informational and educational resources. Acollection of more than 40 separate and unique databases, NC-LIVE is a gateway to articles and publications from magazines, newspapers, scholarly/professional journals, and a variety of reference sources. It is subscription-
based, thus assuring authenticity. Although NC-LIVE is accessed through the Internet, the resources are not available through general use of the Internet.

A variety of audiovisual materials, equipment, and services are available to support the curricula and meet the needs of Nash Community College and serve area citizens. A notable attraction is the collection of classic and popular movies which are available for a three-day free loan period. Late fees accrue at a rate of are $1 per day per video. Outstanding movie and book fines may prevent a student from obtaining a transcript or having a transcript sent to another college, and subsequent class registration.

Library hours are 7:30 AM-9:00 PM Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 AM-4:00 PM on Friday. Hours during the summer months are 8:00 AM-8:00 PM Monday through Thursday and 8:00 AM-4:00 PM on Friday.

Student Support Services

The Nash Community College Student Support Services (SSS) is a Federal Grant Program which is designed to increase the retention, graduation, and transfer rates of student participants and to promote a climate of support for these participants on campus. Students who qualify and are selected for participation in SSS have immediate access to a variety of supportive services to facilitate their academic, social, and personal success.

All potential SSS participants must demonstrate a need for academic support as determined by placement test scores, other diagnostic measurements, or teacher referral.

Students must also meet at least one of the following criteria to participate in SSS:

• Income Status-Family's taxable income does not exceed 150% of the poverty levels provided by the Federal Bureau of Census.

• First Generation-Neither of the student's supporting parents graduated from a four-year college.

• Disability - A diagnosed or obvious physical or mental impairment as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that substantially limits the student's ability to participate in the educational process.

Eligible participants are provided individual educational plans through an assessment process. Services are focused in several main areas: academic tutorials, counseling and advising, workshops, financial aid advising, and transfer assistance. The SSS program staff also works closely with the College's ADA Coordinator to provide reasonable accommodations for participants with disabilities.
