About Placement Testing

The placement test determines where a new student will start coursework at NCC. It includes sections on math and English. The placement test results are used to help NCC determine which class will best meet your needs.

Please bring one of the following accepted forms of identification:
NCC Student ID, or other student identification
Driver’s License
Passport
Other form of government-issued ID

  • The test is self-paced, untimed, and multiple-choice. It is not a pass/fail test.
  • The placement test consists of English and Math questions.
  • Students will be given a Math formula sheet, scratch paper, pencils, and calculators to use during the test. Personal calculators are not allowed.
  • The test may take up to three hours per section.
  • Students will be given the option to complete each section of the test broken down into multiple sections.
  • The placement test scores are valid for 10 years.
  • Students must earn a 70 on each test to advance to the next test.
  • Once your test is completed, you will receive a printed score report.

English Test

The placement test consists of two self-paced, multiple-choice English modules that take approximately two hours each to complete.

Tier I:

  • Introduction to College and Writing
  • Identifying Main Ideas
  • Discovering Implied Meaning
  • Interpreting Bias
  • Analysis through Definition
  • Learning across Disciplines

Tier II:

  • Exploring Comparative Elements
  • Applied Critical Analysis
  • Using sources in Critical Reading and Writing
  • Informal Opinions through
  • Casual Chains

Math Test

The placement test consists of three self-paced, multiple-choice Math tiers that take approximately two hours each to complete. The testing center staff will provide a calculator.

Topics Covered:

Tier I:

  • Operations with whole numbers and real numbers
  • Relationships between fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals
  • Conceptual application problems containing ratios, rates, proportions, and percentages
  • Graphical and algebraic representations of lines
  • Interpretations of basic graphs
  • Applications using U.S. customary and metric units of measurement
  • Geometry of all shapes

Tier II:

  • Concepts in Statistics
  • Solving Equations and Inequalities
  • Exponents, square roots, and
  • order of operations
  • Polynomial operations
  • Graphing

Tier III:

  • Factoring/functions
  • Systems of Equations/Inequalities
  • Rational Expressions
  • Quadratic Equations
